Website updates forthcoming. Words from Melissa:

America on TV is really something else. Half the time, I want to believe what I see.

My work is a practice of mis/believing. I make images and experiences that retell American narratives from TV, film, literature, art, and music. These media can be great fun, but they are also powerful mythmakers and agents of bias. Repeating and remixing these stories helps reveal their patterns and dis/harmonies. Not everything ages well. Let’s talk about it.

There is an art to good conversation, after all. Alongside the media remixes, other projects socialize through interactive productions that center personal and community storytelling amidst the noise of popular media. The truth is out there on our front porches, practice fields, and hiking trails. I want to see what I believe.

Related: I direct Vinegar, which curates expanded art projects in Birmingham, Alabama. I conduct this curatorial practice in intentional dialog with Yes Media productions. It’s all one song.
